Through our Best Practice programme we bring together colleagues from across our
businesses to exchange knowledge, experience and expertise in many operational areas,
such as performance, security, marketing and station development, with the aim to
contribute positively to their performance.


Results for Merseyrail since the beginning
of the Merseyrail franchise include:

  • In 2011, Merseyrail maintained very high levels of punctuality with 95% of trains arriving
    within 5 minutes of scheduled time. In 2011 Merseyrail achieved the joint highest
    passenger satisfaction score (91%) amongst franchised train operators.

  • Introducing a new Security Improvement Plan, reducing fare evasion from 15% to
    3.5%, passenger assaults by more than 60% and staff assaults by 50%; passenger
    satisfaction on personal security improved by 7%.

  • The first rail network in the UK to reach 100% “secure station” status.

  • Opened during 2011 its seventh and eight MtoGo stores at Maghull and Lime Street,
    replacing traditional booking offices.

  • Delivery of 20 stations under “Modern Facilities at Stations” scheme (Customer
    Information Systems, heated waiting shelters).

  • Developing the UK’s first eco station at Ormskirk.
