Northern has won many significant, national awards for its achievements:
At the Cycle-Rail Awards in November, Leeds CyclePoint received the Innovation Award. Northern also received the Partnership Working Award for a host of initiatives.
In October 2011 Northern Rail was named Public Transport of the year (Rail) at the National Transport Awards for the second time (previously in 2007). The award recognised that Northern continues to innovate and improve service quality beyond the terms of it ‘steady state’ franchise contract, as set out below.
In May 2011, Northern was named Sustainable Business of the year at the Environment and Energy Awards wich are open to all industrial and public service organisations. The award recognised progress in the company’s ambition to be the leading train operator in the field of environmental sustainability. Achievements have included adopting an industry-first whole life carbon footprint calculation tool wich assesses not only Northern’s emissions, but also those of its suppliers.
Winning the top UK safety award for 2009, the Sir George Earle trophy from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for achieving outstanding performance in occupational health and safety. Northern Rail is first train operator to win the prestigious trophy in its 53-year history.
