Through our dedicated Best Practice programme we bring together colleagues from across
our businesses to exchange knowledge, experience and expertise in many operational areas,
such as performance, security, marketing and station development, with the aim to contribute
positively to their performance. We have created a successful Northern culture and brand just
four years after bringing together employees from two predecessor companies.

Since the beginning of the Northern Rail franchise passenger numbers have increases
by a stunning 38% to 87 million passengers annually. This achievement is particularly notable
because, unlike other regional train operators, it has been achieved without introducing new
trains or adding new routes. Northern Rail have attracted more customers by improving
punctuality, providing more and newer trains, investing in trains and stations, and better
marketing.


Northern Rail’s achievements also include:

  • Increasing the proportion of trains on time over a 12-month period from 88.38% in 2004
    to 91.33% in the 12 months to December 2011.

  • Patronage rose 2.3% to over 87 million in 2011 and has grown 38% since the franchise
    started in 2004.

  • Improving fleet reliability by 16 year on year and 65% since the beginning of our franchise.

  • Provide services in severe winter conditions that preveted other networks from functioning.
