Alex White joined Abellio in February 2018. Over the coming three to five years, Abellio UK will undertake the largest procurement of new trains in the UK across the train operating groups. As New Trains Projects and Fleet Director, which is a newly created position reporting directly to the UK MD, Alex will oversee all of these major programmes and support the development of the fleet engineering activities across the business.
Alex is responsible for supporting the local project teams in overseeing the specification, design freeze and manufacturers' production of all of Abellio's new train fleets across our operating companies, in order to ensure these are delivered on time and to budget. Beyond supporting the build and delivery process, he is also focused on ensuring that there are appropriate arrangements in place to deliver the maintenance obligations that the Abellio operated fleets will have going forward. Associated with this is activity is the need to ensure that fleet performance in the classic characteristics of reliability, availability and maintainability is optimised for all fleets operating across the Abellio franchise portfolio.
He holds a BSc with Distinction in Quality Management with Manufacturing Technology and Engineering from the University of Paisley, and also completed a Masters in Rail Systems Engineering, Railroad and Railway Transportation at Sheffield University in 2000.
Prior to joining Abellio, Alex spent almost 14 years as Operations Director at Porterbrook Leasing and brings a wealth of experience in rail rolling stock, contract negotiations, engineering project management and planning, procurement and project delivery.
In a very challenging and regulated environment, Alex is well-versed in refurbishment and overhaul programmes, delivering results and improving performance at the most critical times. Leading manufacturing facilities have won awards under his tenure, and industry projects have been delivered ahead of deadlines whilst still maintaining key KPIs thanks to his drive and strong leadership.
