UK's largest cycle/rail network in three years; better walking routes to stations

We will play our part in helping to create a healthier society by making walking and cycling to our stations a more attractive and easier option.

Within the first three years of the new franchise, we will develop the UK's largest cycle/rail network including the roll out of an extra 3,500 cycle parking spaces at stations across the ScotRail network. At key city centre stations – Glasgow Central, Edinburgh Waverley and Stirling – we will introduce staffed Cyclepoints providing secure cycle parking, bike repairs and local information on cycle routes in a dedicated facility for cyclists. Bike hire will also be available at these hubs and other city stations. Throughout the network, the new cycle parking spaces will improve on the quality of current facilities, for example by offering secure parking, accessed by key fobs, at some larger stations, and CCTV coverage of cycle stands at many others.

However, our plans to encourage healthier, active travel go further than better station facilities for cyclists. They also include working with councils and expert sustainable travel organisations throughout the lifetime of the franchise to improve cycle and walking routes to stations so that they are quicker, safer and better signposted. In addition, we will work with housebuilders to help them include convenient cycling and walking routes to stations in residential areas.
